As we get older, it’s easy to become isolated and lonely as our opportunities for social activities reduce. Some older people see no-one for days at a time. A regular weekly visit or phone call from a local volunteer befriender can brighten their day, help improve their mental health and often results in friendship. A typical visit could include a sit down with tea and cake followed by a chat about your lives, or maybe you’ll chat while you play cards. The content of the visit is entirely up to you, but the befriender will always provide a listening ear. We can also signpost you to other support services if needed. Befriending can be a vital link between yourself and the outside world. Maybe you just fancy someone new to chat to and the feeling of knowing that you can expect a weekly visit.
We provide help around the home and our volunteers can help with your shopping. Befrienders visit the homes of older people on a regular basis at a time that is convenient to both the volunteer and the older people. Our volunteers do the house chores of elderly and disabled people along with having chat with them which is very helpful getting them out of isolation and loneliness. Our volunteers are professional and have experience to combat loneliness and isolation. Our befriending service supports the mental and physical wellbeing of elder people in Lancashire. Its is free of cost service. Anyone can refer an older person to the service – family members, GP’s, health visitors, nurses or even a next-door neighbour. Just ensure that you have the permission of the person being referred.
